Prep was introduced into Queensland schools in 2007. From 2017, Queensland children are required to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program that children attend from Monday to Friday during normal school hours, generally from 9am to 3pm.

Children must be aged 5 years by 30 June in the year they start Prep.

To determine when your child can commence their prep year, use the online calculator.

Early and delayed entry to Prep

The decision about when a child enrols in Prep is extremely important and should be made in the child's best educational interests to enable a positive and successful start to school.

Early entry to Prep is only possible if the child meets all the legislative conditions set out in Part 4, Section 17 of the Education (General Provisions) Regulation 2017.

If you believe your circumstances meet the conditions stated above and you wish to seek early entry in the Longreach School of Distance Education Prep program, please direct your enquiries to the Principal.
